Abrasive mix
New shot doesn't clean like the settled mix it becomes. As fines are lost and coarse shot breaks down, the working mix in the machine — not the shot you bought — is what actually hits the part.
Blade wear
A blade releases shot at a slightly different point every degree it wears, which slowly walks the blast pattern off the position it was set for.
Containment
Worn side liners let abrasive escape sideways instead of leaving in the blast stream — the motor draws the same power, but less of what it throws reaches the part.
